This PhD project investigates how Norwegian adolescents navigate a complex writing landscape with two official written standards, Bokmål and Nynorsk, and the increasing use of dialect writing in digital communication. Using a combination of surveys, experiments, and writing analyses, it explores how young people produce, perceive, and mentally represent these varieties. The research shows that exposure to multiple written codes shapes both literacy skills and cognitive processing, and that dialect writing does not negatively influence standard literacy. These findings highlight the importance of acknowledging linguistic diversity in education and show how engaging with multiple varieties can enrich reading and writing skills.
