Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis:
Novel biomarkers enable better detection of testosterone doping - by focusing on previously overlooked metabolites, testosterone doping can now be detected for much longer than with current techniques.
Currently, athletes can cheat using testosterone and escape detection unless tested within a few days. Worse, certain methods, like low-dose gels, are almost undetectable.
We investigated the applicability of “phase II metabolites” to improve detection. In a clinical study with male and female participants, urine samples were collected after administering testosterone as tablets and gels. This allowed us to observe formulation- and sex-specific results. Using liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry, we identified novel biomarkers that extend the detection window for testosterone misuse to up to 4 weeks.
These biomarkers will soon be implemented in international sports testing, revolutionizing anti-doping measures and ensuring fair play in sports.
