Environmental Humanities gathering 82: Guided tour of Phantom Island exhibition, Kurant gallery

UiT's Environmental Humanities Research Group invites you to a guided viewing of the exhibition Phantom Island, currently showing at Kurant visningsrom in Tromsø. The viewing will be led by curator Niels Nielsen of Kurant, and we have been promised coffee :)

Phantom Island is a group exhibition and public programme exploring how remote places are imagined, represented and continually reinterpreted.

At the centre of the project lies Bouvet Island, a Norwegian dependency in the south atlantic ocean and one of the most isolated places on Earth. Few people have ever set foot there, yet across almost three centuries the island has accumulated an extraordinary number of representations, stories and projections. It has existed as a cartographic uncertainty, an object of territorial expansion and scientific research, a Cold War mystery, a fictional landscape and, more recently, a site of online speculation.

Taking Bouvet as its point of departure, Phantom Island looks at remoteness not only as geographical distance, but as something shaped through maps, images, technologies, institutions and stories. Through installation, moving image, sculpture, sound, LARP, performance, video games and research-based practices, the participating artists move between historical material and speculative approaches to consider how places beyond direct experience become visible, meaningful and imaginable.
