Birth rates are declining worldwide, and Georgia is no exception. Using data from Georgia’s National Statistics Office and Birth Registry, we found that births in Georgia have dropped by 4.4% annually over the past decade, with women now having fewer than two children on average, below the level needed to maintain population size. Teenage pregnancies have fallen by 65%, but pregnancies among girls under 18 still pose serious health risks for their babies. At the same time, more women are having children later, with the average age of first-time mothers rising to 28 years. Despite the global disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Georgia’s fertility and abortion trends stayed stable. However, if current trends continue, the birth rate could drop even further by 2034, raising concerns about an aging population and fewer young people. Supporting families with children, addressing the challenges of teenage pregnancies, and attracting emigrants back are essential to ensuring a stable future for Georgia.
