14.50-15.15 Body Height as a Probable Causal Risk Factor for Hip Fracture
Professor Håkon Eduard Meyer, University of Oslo
There is an inverse association between body height and several health outcomes. However, this does not apply to hip fractures, as taller individuals have an increased risk of hip fracture; in fact, factors related to body height appear to be causally linked to this elevated risk.
15.15-15.25 Questions/discussion
15.25-15.50 Genetics of social inequalities in health
Professor Karri Silventoinen, University of Helsinki
The rapid development in behavioral genetics has greatly increased opportunities to study how the interplay between nature and nurture can shape social health inequalities. By using the classical twin design and molecular genetic methods, we have discovered that low social position reinforces the effects of genetic factors predisposing to obesity. We also demonstrated that genetic designs could provide insight into the background of social inequalities in cardiovascular diseases. Increasing knowledge of the role of genetics helps us better understand the influence of the environment on social health inequalities.
15.50-16.00 Questions/discussions and closing – Professor Guri Skeie, Department of community medicine, UiT
