The lecture is unfortunately cancelled due illness

Open lecture in Sámi Week with Art Historian Mårten Snickare

Mårten Snickare is professor of art history at Stockholm University and director of Accelerator, an exhibition space that is part of the university.

In his recently published book Colonial Objects in Early Modern Sweden and Beyond. From Kunstkammer to Current Museum Crisis (2022), Snickare studies the visual and material traces of Sweden’s colonial history from the 17th century until today, focusing on objects that were acquired by Swedish colonizers, in Sápmi and in other places, and incorporated in museums and other collections.

The lecture takes its point of departure from the book's last chapter (chapter 8), "Learning from the Kunstkammer? Colonial Objects and Decolonial Options", where colonial objects are considered at the centre of a heated debate over the present state of museums, and their possible futures. The book is available open access: https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/54251

The lecture is hosted by the research project GOVMAT, UiB, and the research group WONA, UiT
