Research Seminar: The Arctic as a space “between” and “within” continents

In this seminar, with Huayra Llanqua will discuss a bridging of art, ecology, and socio-political dynamics in the Arctic.

Huayra is a PhD candidate in Plastic Arts at the Arts of Images and Contemporary Art laboratory at the University of Paris 8. She is part of the Doctoral School of Aesthetics, Sciences, and Technology of the Arts, and she works on the Arts, Ecologies, and Commons research program.  Her research focuses on the processes of passage, displacement, and transformation, often imperceptible or unfolding over time. Inspired by the concepts of travel, wayfaring, and emergent paths, her work spans multiple media, including photography, moving images, ceramics, and sound exploration.

Her artistic practice and research are deeply informed by her experiences traveling between America and Europe, with a significant focus on the circumpolar region and the Arctic. This perspective allows her to explore the Arctic as a space “between” and “within” continents, addressing its complex cultural, historical, and ecological dimensions.

In this seminar, Huayra will discuss her research on the Arctic as a circumpolar “whole,” a region shaped by the interplay of states, nations, cultures, histories, and relationships. She will explore how the Arctic can be understood as a shared yet contested space, and the ways in which land and territory are perceived and divided.
