Internasjonalt seminar: Sex og politikk i Malawi

Til tross for noe fremgang de siste årene er barneekteskap og prostitusjon fortsatt utbredt, og de færreste har tilgang på prevensjonsmidler. (English text below)

Sjansen for komplikasjoner og i verste fall død knyttet til svangerskap eller fødsel er stor. Bærekraftsmål 3 - å sikre god helse og livskvalitet for alle - innebærer blant annet å redusere mødre- og barnedødelighet, og å sikre allmenn tilgang til tjenester knyttet til seksuell og reproduktiv helse.

Men hvordan går man frem med dette arbeidet i et land som Malawi, og hvordan påvirker koronapandemien utviklingen?

MedHum: Medisinstudentenes Humanitæraksjon vil innlede til seminaret på norsk, øvrige innlegg vil være på engelsk.

Innledere:

• Judith Daire, Lecturer and Course Coordinator, Curtin University (Perth Australia). Daire vil diskutere seksuelle og reproduktive rettigheter i Malawi og fortelle hvordan situasjonen har endret seg over tid, samt hvilken påvirkning NGOer har hatt på arbeidet.
• Representant fra Redd Barna Malawi, De vil snakke om sitt arbeid i Malawi for å forbedre seksuelle og reproduktiv rettigheter til tenåringer og hvordan Covid 19 har påvirket situasjonen.
• Moderator: Mia Emilie Andresen Reinen, leder MedHum Tromsø

Sex and Politics in Malawi

In Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, 1 out of 3 girls get pregnant during their teenage years.

Despite some progress recent years child marriage and prostitution is still widespread, and few have access to contraceptives. The chances for medical complications during pregnancy and birth are high, and girls often loose the possibilities to continue their education after getting pregnant. Sustainable Development Goal 3 – ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages – includes reducing maternal mortality and end preventable deaths of newborn, and to ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services. How does one work with these topics in Malawi? What has been done so far, and how does the current COVID-19 pandemic affect the situation?

The seminar will start with an introduction by MedHum: Medisinstudentenes Humanitæraksjon in Norwegian, while the other introductions will be in English.

Speakers:

• Judith Daire, Lecturer and Course Coordinator, Curtin University (Perth, Australia). She will discuss the status on sexual reproductive human rights in Malawi, and the changes in Malawi the recent years and the work/impact of NGOs
• Representative from Save the Children in Malawi. They will discuss their work in Malawi on sexual and reproductive health and rights for teenagers, and how the effect COVID-19 has affected the situation.
• Moderator: Mia Emilie Andresen Reinen, Leader of MedHum Tromsø
