UNIS (The University Centre in Svalbard) offers Arctic-focused courses and research opportunities. Students from universities that have an exchange agreement with UiT The Arctic University of Norway may apply to study or conduct research at UNIS.

Application process at a glance

1️⃣ Apply directly to UNIS → 2️⃣ Get nominated to UiT → 3️⃣ Submit required documents to UiT → 4️⃣ Receive admission from UNIS → 5️⃣ Become registered as a UiT student → 6️⃣ Complete your Digital Learning Agreement (Erasmus+ students only) → 7️⃣ Receive your transcript of records from UiT


1️⃣ Apply directly to UNIS

Visit the UNIS application portal and submit your application:

🕒 Important: UNIS has its own Application Web (Søknadsweb), admission requirements and application deadlines. Make sure you submit your application before UNIS own deadlines.

2️⃣ Get nominated to UiT

Your home university must nominate you to UiT through our online nomination system:

Nomination letter for UNIS

After your home university has nominated you to UiT, you will receive an email from UiT titled "Nomination for student exchange".

Save or print this email and upload it to the UNIS application portal as proof that you have been nominated to UiT.

Alternatively, your home university may provide a nomination letter that can be uploaded to UNIS.


3️⃣ Log in to UiT's Application Web (Søknadsweb) and upload ID and transcripts

Once nominated, you will receive instructions from UiT on how to log in to Søknadsweb (Application Web).

You will normally be required to upload:

  • 🛂 A copy of your passport
  • 📄 Your transcript of records

4️⃣ Receive admission from UNIS

UNIS will assess your application and notify you directly of the admission decision.

Please monitor your email regularly and follow any instructions provided by UNIS.


5️⃣ Become registered as a UiT student

Once you have been admitted to UNIS, please notify the Incoming Student Exchange Team at UiT:

UiT will then register you as an exchange student.

Once admitted to UNIS, you will:

  • ✅ Be registered as an exchange student at UiT
  • ✅ Be exempt from paying the semester fee
  • ✅ Receive a student record at UiT
  • ✅ Receive a UiT transcript of records after successfully completing your studies at UNIS

6️⃣ Erasmus+ students: Digital Learning Agreement

After you have been admitted to UNIS and registered at UiT, your Digital Learning Agreement can be processed.

Please contact your Erasmus Coordinator or International Office and use the following information:

  • Institution name: UNIVERSITETET I TROMSØ – NORGES ARKTISKE UNIVERSITET
  • City: Tromsø
  • Erasmus code: N TROMSO 01
  • Faculty/department: International Cooperation Section
  • Contact person: Incoming Student Exchange Team

7️⃣ Receive your transcript of records from UiT

After successfully completing your studies at UNIS, UiT will issue an official transcript of records showing the courses and examinations completed at UNIS.
