Dr. Muhammad Virk is currently serving as Professor (full) at the Institute of Industrial Technology (IIT) and research group leader of Arctic Technology & Icing Research Group (arcICE) at UiT- The Arctic University of Norway, where presently he also holds the position as board member at the Faculty of Engineering Science & Technology. He holds the position of visiting professor at various universities around the globe. He completed his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in aerospace engineering, whereas he obtained his PhD (Mechanical Engineering/Computational Fluid Dynamics) degree from United Kingdom. He completed his post-doctoral research fellowship from Norway on topic related to wind energy in cold climate/wind turbine operations in icing conditions. At UiT, he has participated in both academic and research activities, He particularly established research activities and infrastructure related to cold climate technology, icing & renewable energy. Professor Virk has established a wide network of researchers across the globe and presently he is working with different researchers & institutes in United Kingdom, USA, China, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Canada, Japan, Germany, South Korea, Spain, India, Pakistan & Nepal on topics related to icing and cold climate. On International level, he has been part of a team to establish ‘Nordic Wind Energy Research Center’ in collaboration between researchers from Norway, Sweden, and Finland. He also lay down the foundations of Norwegian atmospheric icing/cold climate research center at UiT through his nICE research project, and he aims to establish this research center with future research activities and collaboration in near future. He has received various distinguished awards for best project and research papers, an example is the winning of EU Arctic Award in 2018 from European Union, for one of his research projects focused on wind energy in cold climate. Professor Virk is also engaged in various applied research projects co-funded by industry and various national and European funding agencies. During last 15 years, he has successfully managed and participated as principal & co-investigator in 22 international research projects funded by the European Union, Norwegian Research Council, and industry. Presently, he is the author of 200+ scientific publications (peer reviewed journal publications, conference proceedings, workshops & seminars).
