Arctic Future Pathfinders – A journey through the Northwest Passage

The course MNF-3001/8001 Arctic Future Pathfinders – A journey through the Northwest Passage provides a unique, hands-on learning experience aboard the Norwegian tall ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl as part of the One Ocean Expedition II through the Northwest Passage.

The course is centered on acquiring and practicing skills on interdisciplinary collaboration and anticipatory thinking in relation to the future of the Arctic. Participants will work on group projects, attend lectures and workshops, and participate in hackathons, everything integrated in the life as sailing trainees onboard the ship. Education, research, and outreach activities onboard will focus on sustainability challenges and imagining alternative futures of the Arctic, integrating both conventional science and Indigenous knowledge. The course runs from June to November 2025, with the onboard part taking place from early August to early October.

While the primary focus is on academic learning, participants will also serve as sailing trainees during one of the two legs of the voyage: either from Nuuk, Greenland to Cambridge Bay, Canada (ca. 21 days) in August 2025, or from Cambridge Bay to Anchorage, US (ca. 30 days) in September/October 2025. This includes active involvement in daily sailing routines such as sail setting, navigation, and watch duties. The combination of academic and practical work fosters experiential learning and teamwork, essential for addressing complex sustainability challenges in the Arctic.

The course is open to any discipline and for UiT PhD candidates, second-year Master’s students from any discipline at UiT, and students in integrated master’s programs who have completed three years of study by the course start. The application deadline is October 31, 2024.
