To Prevent and Manage Conflict in Research Supervision

Conflict is an inevitable aspect of human interaction, and the realm of postgraduate supervision is no exception. As supervisors, it is crucial to build a constructive relationship and to understand the dynamics of potential conflicts and how they can be prevented and managed to foster a productive and supportive environment for research students. Conflict management in postgraduate supervision is essential, highlighting the importance of offering strategies to navigate potential challenges.

Working with Preventing Conflicts in UiT's Program for PhD Supervisors

Conflict in postgraduate supervision can arise from various sources, including differing expectations, communication breakdowns, and personal differences. It is essential to recognize that conflict is not inherently negative; when managed effectively, it can lead to growth, innovation, and stronger relationships. The key lies in understanding the nature of conflicts and addressing them constructively. Preventing conflicts in postgraduate supervision involves proactive approaches and attitudes that create a foundation for a positive and collaborative relationship between the supervisor, students, and other important stakeholders. In the program, we focus on the critical issue of mapping expectations from the very start – a core issue to prevent conflicts.

To Prepare for the Workshop:

  1. Think through the theme and how you can work with mutual experiences to prevent conflicts.
  2. Reflect on: “How can we, as supervisors, colleagues, and leaders, balance providing work that promotes an inclusive, collaborative, and safe environment that prevents conflicts?”
  3. Identify other important aspects related to the core themes or questions to ask the external expert.
