Research on Sámi Research and on Representation of Sámi Cultural Heritage

Our people

About

Recently, the scholarly gaze has been increasingly turned from the Indigenous subject to researchers who study the Indigenous, and to the societal processes that have regulated the production of such knowledge in the past and the present. This turn has contributed to an expanding body of ‘research on research’ within Indigenous and postcolonial studies internationally, and produced clusters of research in histories of scholarly disciplines such as anthropology and history of science. Our research group discuss, read and produce exhibitions, multimedia, scientific and educational text about these topics.

Abstract
Knowledge production at Árran Julevsáme guovdásj (Árran Lulesámi Center) and Várdobáiki sámi guovddáš (Várdobáiki Sámi Center), two cultural centers with museums, is the starting point of this thesis. Focusing on these two cultural centers’ museums, I explore how knowledge production at Árran and Várdobáiki is expressed in selected projects from 2010 to 2022, and prominent themes, values and perspectives. Furthermore, I examine how the development and use of Sámi terms can contribute to the understanding of knowledge production at the two museums and in what ways these terms provide perspectives on Sámi museology. The thesis shows that "muitát/mujttalit/re-remembering" constitutes a significant component in indigenization and repatriation processes at Árran and Várdobáiki. These are processes that involve the reactivation of Sámi culture and history, while at the same time challenging the established common history and laying the foundations for equal Sámi perspectives. The thesis also shows that the negotiations that took place in Bååstede represented a central arena for knowledge production. Although it is not possible to define a unified Sámi museology that can encompass the full breadth of the diversity discussed in the thesis, sámáidahttin (indigenization), máhttsat ja mujttalit (repatriation process) and muitát emerge as significant driving forces in Sámi museums in the period that has been the subject of my research.

Report 2022/2023:
