In 2024, the world's largest avalanche conference takes place in Tromsø.
The International Snow Science Workshop (ISSW) is a biannual conference that attracts snow nerds from all over the world. During the event in Innsbruck in 2018, over 1000 researchers and practitioners participated in the conference.
In 2024, UiT and CARE will, together with the Norwegian Water and Energy Directorate (NVE), the National Road Authority (SVV), and the Norwegian Geological Institute (NGI), host the conference in Tromsø.
This is the first time the conference is located to one of the Nordic countries.
The theme of the 2024 conference is, as always, "Merging theory with practice". ISSW has an applied focus, and aims to reach scientists, practitioners, and the public. The Tromsø version of the workshop will put special focus on decision-making under uncertainty.
Tromsø is located on 69 degrees north and is surrounded by avalanche terrain. It is therefore an ideal place for the ISSW. To allow interested participants, who can not travel to Tromsø, a chance to participate, the conference will also be available online.
