Belarusian Musicians in Europe and the Politics of Infrastructural Imaginaries

A talk by the PhD student Libbie Katsev (UiT)

"This talk draws on fieldwork conducted in Vilnius and Warsaw over the past eight months, primarily semi-structured qualitative interviews with Belarusian musicians and music promoters, managers, and influencers. I begin with a discussion of how musicians and creative managers describe the conditions of musical practice in Belarus as compared to those in migration. I ask in what ways the challenges interlocutors have described are specific, or not, to the Belarusian context.  I then focus on the cases of several musicians/cultural promoters whose practices, I argue, embody imagined “infrastructures” that stem from political imaginaries of a European nation-state".
