Lilli Mittner

Virgečilgehus

I lead and coordinate research environments that bring gender studies into dialogue with the arts, the humanities and the sciences:

These roles involve research leadership and project development, supervision and teaching, coordinating interdisciplinary networks and seminar programmes, editorial and open-access publishing work, research communication, and institutional work on gender equality and diversity. I am also a member of UiT's Equality and Diversity Committee (Likestillings- og mangfoldsutvalget), 2026–2030.

    Dutkanberoštumit

I research the gendered dimensions of human thinking, acting and creating. I am particularly interested in how different people and forms of knowledge can work together, and how this collaboration can be made visible. The question of who can contribute to knowledge is also a question of equality, because knowledge is always situated: who is asking, from where, with which body and which history, and who is listening, shapes what we can know. In my work, I combine archival research, discourse and policy analysis, and ethnographic fieldwork with situated art interventions. I often collaborate across disciplines and with partners beyond academia.

    I am specifically interested in:

    • Ageing, dementia and creativity: How ageing and dementia can be understood in new ways through what happens between people. Here I approach feminist care as a shared practice, and growth and a good life as something we create together.
    • Environmental humanities and coastal cultures: How gender, labour and knowledge are organised along northern coastlines, and what local knowledge can contribute to our understanding of the ocean’s pasts and futures.
    • Music, gender and performative historiography: How women’s cultural work can be recovered and brought back to life, and how the writing of history is itself a performative act that makes particular pasts possible.
