This is the third UiT miljøhumaniora nettverk meeting for the autumn 2022 semester, this time inviting you on an environmental humanities walk and talk led by Anatolijs Venovcevs, Doctoral research fellow at UiT, member of UiT miljøhumaniora nettverk and the Unruly Heritage research group.

While often assumed to be part of Tromsø’s “untouched nature”, the forests on Tromsø island contain complex entanglements of past human uses and their aftermaths. The walk and talk will introduce the participants to two examples of such remains – the lakes where ice was harvested in the early 1900s for the English trawler fleet and a part of the fortifications from the German occupation of the island in the Second World War. The attendants will be asked to consider the ongoing material legacies of past events, reflect on how disused human materials facilitate the emergence of alternative more-than-human ecologies, and contemplate upon the agency of ordinary objects in environmental humanities practice.

Where to meet and what to bring:

We will meet at the trailhead at the end of Gimlevegen - https://goo.gl/maps/5aLYuRLiVP14CY81A
