On the outskirts of Tromsö, both reindeer- and sheep herders are preparing for the busiest time of the year. In late spring calves and lambs are born, which keep the herders busy both day and night. Not only do they need to protect their animals from different predators in nature, but also the challenges of what a growing city cause. With the animals being so vulnerable this time of the year, it is not an easy task. The eagles have increased in numbers, and their government-protected status make them an enemy hard to face. The ever-growing city leads to more people in the mountainous grazing areas. This too threatens the animals and thereby their safekeepers in various ways. This film shows the love and the care the herders have for their animals, and the constant struggles they are facing living and herding in the periphery of a developing city.

Holding Space unfolds an elderly American woman´s life journey and vicissitudes of becoming. Having retreated to a small town in Aotearoa New Zealand, Sunshine Appleby runs a Residential Learning Centre. In all her splendour, Sunshine focuses on planting visionary seedlings towards a sustainable future and mental wellbeing.

Disjoined from the outside world by a big gate, Sunshine’s door is open to newcomers and locals. Kez, having joined the mental health program, invites us on a journey of dealing with grief through holding space practices that soon weave in with the understanding of the complexities of Sunshine´s own life.

Approaching her 80s, Sunshine questions mortality and her own wellbeing. Difficult decisions must be made, as she struggles to find her place in a changing world.
