spring 2019 STE6290 Materials Selection in Product Design - 7.5 ECTS

Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 December
Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October

Type of course

For students at the Master's Degree Programme in Engineering Design. The course may be taken as a single subject.

Admission requirements

A relevant undergraduate bachelor Engineering programme with minimum 30 credits Mathematics/statistics topics
Application code: 9371

Course content

The interaction between function, shape (geometry) and material selection in engineering design will be studied (especially in terms of mechanical design). Among other things, the following points are central to the discipline:

- Design Process

- Materials and material structures

- Selection of materials for components exposed to certain stresses

- Development of materials indices and the use of these

- Specific case studies

- Shape Factors

- Use available charts to select the right material for concrete products.

Objectives of the course

Learning outcome:

After completing the course, the students will have knowledge in mechanical engineering design. The students will be able to:

- through a systematic method to choose the most suitable material

and form in technical design of various products

- find the material indices of different problems and to use it to find the best materials

- analyze and find the failure mechanisms for a slender tube and use a failure mechanism chart

- understand what the shape efficiency is and use the shape factors to optimize different components or products

Language of instruction and examination

Norwegian (guiding can be given in English)

Teaching methods

Regular lectures, guiding, project work and video lectures.
For more information, see the course homepage in Canvas when you are enrolled in the course.

Assessment

Mappeevaluering (portfolio assessment?).

The students will during the course get 3 project tasks that must be delivered as reports electronically in Canvas. Each report will be given a grade, and the total grade will be a mean value of all the grades. Detailed information will be given in Canvas when the course starts.

The reports will form the basis of the overall assessment.

Grading follows A-F grading scale, F is Fail.

There will not be arranged a re-sit/ continuation exam for this course.
