Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

Type of course

The subject can be taken as a singular course.

  • The PhD course is primarily open to UiT's PhD students (Category 1).

One or more of these categories of course students may also

be admitted:

  • Category 2: Participants in the Associate Professor programme that fulfil the educational requirements.
  • Category 3: Doctoral students from other universities.
  • Category 4: People with a minimum of a master's degree (or equivalent), who have not been admitted to a doctoral programme.

Course content

The course in systems engineering will focus on different methodologies that provide the students with tools for the analysis, design, and operation of complex systems. Core issues such as the systems engineering process, breakdown and aggregation of needs and requirements, stakeholder identification, definition of efficiency measures, life cycle analyses, and trade-off analyses will be assessed. Using Systems Engineering as a Research methodology will be taught and applied to the student project and final report.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge:
After passing the course, the student is expected to be able to

  • Obtain basic knowledge of system theory.
  • Learn methodologies that often applied by system engineers.

Skills:
After passing the course, the student is expected to be able to

  • Carry out analysis of complex system with the purpose of modelling and designing system.
  • Implement the designed system.

After passing the course, the student is expected to be able to

  • Gain necessary knowledge, skill and ability to conduct research in a variety of domains.

Teaching methods

Guided self-study, seminars, paper writing tasks.

Assessment

Mandatory task: Essay.

Exam: Oral examination. The grade is Passed/Not passed.

A re-sit exam will be arranged for this course.
