Wild Romanticism

UiT, The Arctic University of Norway
May 24-27, 2018

The Wild Romanticism Conference will be hosted by the University of Tromsø, Norway May 24-27th, in collaboration with the International Conference on Romanticism and the Nordic Association for Romantic Studies . Tromsø is located 217 miles above the Arctic Circle in an area of outstanding natural beauty, which makes it ideal for contemplating the wilderness and our shifting understanding of its importance for human beings. The "Wild Romanticism" conference is designed to invite reflection on the romantic-period conceptualization of wild-ness in a variety of national contexts, with the "wild" being thought of as that which resists being assimilated into human concepts or control, but also as that which is bounded by human definition.

And though thou seem’st a weedling wild,
Wild and neglected like me,
Thou still art dear to Nature’s child,
And I will stop to notice thee.

- John Clare
"To an insignificant flower,
obscurely blooming in a lonely wild"

We received many excellent proposals for the conference. Forty scholars from ten countries have been chosen to attend.

The International Conference on Romanticism  was founded in 1991 to promote, maintain and improve teaching, research and related endeavors in the field of Romanticism studies, and to facilitate communication among scholars and teachers through annual meetings and publications. A forum for colleges in literature, philosophy, history, musicology, history of science, art history, and other disciplines, the International Conference on Romanticism has an interdisciplinary and international membership." (www.icr.byu.edu ).

The Nordic Association for Romantic Studies is a multidisciplinary forum for researchers, lecturers, students and others with an interest in Scandinavian and European Romanticism, and its literature and art, science and philosophy, history and print culture. NARS has its roots in Dansk Selskab for Romantikstudier, which was founded in 1997. The organization works to encourage cooperation and exchange between Romantic researchers in the Nordic countries, promote the study of Romanticism on a national and cross-national perspective and disseminate knowledge on Romanticism.
